There are many YouTube videos on Wing Chun. eventually, any of them are worth a look. But for the beginner who might easily get the wrong idea and wrong impressions and maybe develop bad habits, don’t watch any videos:

Street.JPG
  1. where big strong teacher beats up a weaker slower student who just has his arm sticking out for 5 minutes

  2. where Wing Chun teacher or students doesn’t have a good stance and just relies on hands which are faster than the student he is beating up.

  3. where teacher pays no attention to maintaining good elbow positions. So if elbows are flying all over the place don’t watch that.

  4. where a teacher does a bunch of fancy movements or redundant movements before getting around to hitting the attacker. If an attacker does a punch and the teacher does a half dozen movements before hitting the student then don’t watch that, no matter how fast and how good form it looks. That’s the wrong idea. Every movement should theoretically be a strike.

  5. where a teacher is stiff and tense and fast. Where the teacher outdoes his slower and weaker student with speed and strength. Or the teacher weights 250 pounds and is very muscular and beats up a 100 pound student. It happens.

  6. where it just looks like a children’s brawl except with grown men doing it. If the movements are spastic, stiff, and just use a lot of speed leaving a lot of openings and holes everywhere for possible counters, don’t watch that.

  7. where an unknown person that nobody has ever heard of is billed as a master of Wing Chun who attempts to beat up an MMA guy. Don’t conclude from this that Wing Chun is no good. I know of no recognized Master who has fought in any MMA fight.

  8. where a Wing Chun fighter stands there with his hands out in a Donnie Yen pose and has no mobility, no power in his hits and no capability to take any punishment like any MMA fighter can. These people will always lose and give a bad name to the art.

In your sticking hands practice if you or your partner don’t pay attention to the stance, or your elbow position, and just go with a flurry of fast spastic knee jerk bitch slapping type of ineffective combination hits then don’t even bother to practice sticking hands. It will be a waste of time.

Sticking hands is not about who can hit who the fastest. Also if you just do the same favorite move over and over again, because that’s the only thing you can make work, you are also wasting your time. If you have no goal in mind while practicing then don’t bother practicing because it will be a waste of time.
